Handcrafted Raku Fired Ceramics Inspired by the Wild Cornish Coastline

Raku in Japanese literally means Pleasure. It is a process which encompasses the four elements of nature - earth, air, fire, and water.

“ Cornwall is County of wild, rugged, and inspirational beauty. I feel so lucky to have grown up here in West Penwith where the land is immersed in the elements; shaped by the sea. It feels to me like this peninsula acts as a magnet for creative souls drawn to bathe in its beauty and to share artistic interpretations inspired by such dramatic surroundings. My imagination has always been sparked by the visual beauty of the natural world. I see a kaleidoscope of colour and pattern revealed in the living landscape. The interplay of the elements; light and movement from sun on sea and land - ever-changing and ephemeral.
I like nothing better than beachcombing along the rugged coastlines in search of found treasures and precious fragments deposited by the waters that ebb and flow along the edges of the land. Spending time outdoors, I soak in my surroundings; observing, photographing, drawing aspects which engage my imagination. I weave images together into stylised, abstracted but recognisable designs, combining colour, texture, and pattern to indulge a passion for decoration and ornament. The Raku process allows me to create ceramics which display precious, jewel-like qualities which I believe reflect and resonate with the natural landscapes that I aim to portray”.

“Man needs colour to live; it’s just as necessary an element as fire and water.”
